A 4 x 4ft solid floppy — opaque black fabric on a hinged frame, blocking light completely. The smallest of the large-format cutters, and the one a single grip can rig alone.

When it’s the right call

Cuts light instead of adding it — block sun off a background, kill spill from a fixture, or add shape to a face with negative fill. Controlling where light ISN'T is half of cinematography. The 4x4 covers tight, single-subject work.

Where to set it up

Rig between the source and whatever you're protecting. One or two C-stands with grip arms; bag every stand.

Get the most out of it

  • Closer to the subject = softer cut; closer to the source = harder edge
  • Black solid beside an interview face carves instant cheekbones (negative fill)
  • Big solids make open shade for actors on sunny days
