An 8 x 8ft solid — opaque black fabric that blocks light outright, sized to the 8x8 butterfly frame. The mid-size cutter for shading actors, blacking out windows and building negative fill.

When it’s the right call

Cuts light instead of adding it — block sun off a background, kill spill from a fixture, or add shape to a face with negative fill. Controlling where light ISN'T is half of cinematography. The 8x8 covers one or two people and mid-size sources.

Where to set it up

Rig between the source and whatever you're protecting. Needs its frame and two combo stands, cornered into the wind and bagged heavily.

Get the most out of it

  • Closer to the subject = softer cut; closer to the source = harder edge
  • Black solid beside an interview face carves instant cheekbones (negative fill)
  • Big solids make open shade for actors on sunny days
